Canada is the second-largest country in the world in terms of land area, yet it ranks only 38th1 in terms of population, which is estimated to be 35.4 million2. The majority of Canada’s population is concentrated in a narrow band along the country’s southern edge close to the border with the United States. The population is also concentrated by province: Ontario and Quebec contain between them 62% of the total population. In Canada, there are two official languages, English and French, and over 100 other non-official languages.
