Church in Calgary

CHURCH HISTORY & CHURCH LIFE

A handful of saints began to meet in Calgary in 1979. In the following year, some from the church in Vancouver began to be burdened to migrate to Calgary, and the first of three families from there arrived in February 1981. With the addition of 10 adults and 11 children from Vancouver and a family from the Philippines, the total number meeting there rose to 31. The church began to grow, but the growth was somewhat limited because of the need to move continually from one rented facility to another.

In 1994, the church acquired a large parcel of land in an excellent location. In 1998, the construction of a new meeting hall was completed. Since then, the church began to grow normally.

In recent years, some have moved to Red Deer and Lethbridge. These two localities do not yet have the Lord’s table established; they may be considered “outposts” of the church in Calgary.

Red Deer is a city in Central Alberta, about 147 km or about 1.5 hours drive from Calgary with a population of 98,600 (2014). Around 2008, some moved to Red Deer and began to meet in homes, primarily for the prayer meetings and weekly home meetings. Currently the saints there would routinely travel to Calgary to join the Lord’s table meetings.

Lethbridge is a city in Southern Alberta, some 210 km or 2.5 hours drive from Calgary with a population of 93,000 (2014). Those meeting in Lethbridge live in several surrounding communities that are quite spread out (up to 45 minutes drive from the city itself). Since around 2010 they began meeting in places outside the city of Lethbridge. In February 2013 they rented a meeting place in Lethbridge. Recently a family purchased a home very close to the University of Lethbridge (2013 enrollment 8,212).
